Summer is often filled with vacations, camps, sports, and family activities. At For the Widow Ministries, our summer mission trip offers families a different way to spend a week together: serving widows, sharing the Gospel, and building relationships in the Dominican Republic.
A family mission trip offers something few other summer activities can. Parents and children have the opportunity to serve together, experience another culture, and witness God at work in ways that often leave a lasting impact on the entire family. Caring for widows is one of the clearest expressions of the faith described in James 1:27, and serving together gives families the opportunity to experience that calling firsthand while encouraging others in the name of Christ.
If you are considering a summer mission trip for your family, this guide explores what makes serving together such a meaningful experience, how to know if your family is ready, and why so many families choose to spend part of their summer serving together.
What Age Is Right for a Family Mission Trip?
For the Widow Ministries encourages families to serve together in the Dominican Republic. In general, we recommend that children under the age of 10 not participate because of the amount of travel, the long days spent in the communities, and the expectation that team members are able to share the Gospel with the people they meet.
That said, every child is different. If you believe your child under the age of 10 is ready for the physical demands and purpose of the trip, we encourage you to contact our team. We’d be happy to answer your questions and help you determine whether the trip is the right fit for your family.
As you consider whether your family is ready, think beyond age alone. Consider how your child responds to travel, long flights and bus rides, changes in routine, hot weather, unfamiliar foods, and meeting new people. It is also important to consider their spiritual maturity and whether they are ready to participate in the purpose of the trip by serving others and sharing the hope of Christ.

Best Summer Destinations for Families
We’re a little biased, but we think the Dominican Republic is a wonderful place for families to serve. Not because it’s the only place God is at work, but because it gives families the opportunity to participate in a ministry where relationships have been built over time and local ministry leaders are faithfully serving their communities every day.

When families join us, they aren’t arriving to start something new. They become part of a ministry where widows know our team, our Dominican ministry leaders know the communities they serve, and each visit builds on the work already underway. Instead of spending the week trying to establish trust, families can focus on encouraging widows, sharing the Gospel, and learning from the people they meet.
Of course, the Dominican Republic is not the only place where families can serve. The right destination depends on the type of ministry your family feels called to, your children’s ages, travel considerations, and the organization leading the trip. Wherever you choose to serve, look for a ministry with strong local leadership, a clear biblical purpose, and a long-term commitment to the people and communities it serves. You can learn more about our ministry on our Our Vision page.
What to Expect on a Family Mission Trip
The ministry itself may look much like any other mission trip, but experiencing it together as a family makes it unique. Parents and children witness the same conversations, hear the same stories, and share the same opportunities to encourage others throughout the week.
Serving together also creates something families rarely have in the middle of everyday life: uninterrupted time with a shared purpose. Rather than everyone going in different directions, parents and children spend the week learning, serving, praying, and reflecting together. Those shared experiences naturally lead to conversations that might never happen at home. Questions arise, perspectives change, and families often find themselves talking about what they saw and what God is teaching them long after the day has ended.
One parent who joined a recent For the Widow Ministries mission trip shared, “Serving with my family was an amazing experience!” She went on to describe watching God work in people’s lives, building an immediate connection with the widow her family sponsors, and being reminded that God calls His people to care for those in need and share the Gospel. Those kinds of experiences become part of a family’s story. Years later, children often remember the people they prayed with, the stories they heard, and the ways they saw God at work.
Every family’s experience is different, but many return home with treasured memories, a deeper appreciation for one another, and stories they will continue telling for years to come.
How to Prepare Your Kids
Preparing for a mission trip begins long before you pack your suitcase. Spend time talking with your children about where you are going, why your family has chosen to serve, and what they can expect during the week. Encourage them to ask questions, especially if they have never traveled internationally or experienced a different culture.
It is also important to prepare them for the practical realities of the trip. Talk about long travel days, hot weather, unfamiliar foods, and changes in routine. Help them understand that not everything will go exactly as planned, and that’s okay. Flexibility and a positive attitude go a long way on a mission trip.
Just as important is preparing your family’s hearts. Read Scripture together, pray for the widows, families, and communities you will meet, and talk about why serving others matters. Encourage your children to listen well, show kindness, and remember that the purpose of the trip is not to solve every problem they see, but to love people well and point them to Christ.
At For the Widow Ministries, team members receive resources, including a 15-Day Prayer Guide and a 3-Minute Testimonial Guide, to help them prepare spiritually before the trip. Preparing well helps children arrive with realistic expectations, open hearts, and a greater understanding of why your family has chosen to serve together.
Addressing Common Parent Concerns
It is natural to have questions before taking your family on a mission trip, especially if it is your first time serving internationally. Parents often wonder about safety, travel, language barriers, and whether the trip will be a good fit for their family.

At For the Widow Ministries, we want families to feel informed and prepared before they travel. If you have questions about travel, lodging, meals, or what to expect, our Mission Trip FAQs page is a great place to start. Our team is also available to answer questions and help you determine whether one of our mission trips is the right fit for your family.
Once you arrive in the Dominican Republic, you won’t be navigating the experience on your own. Families serve alongside experienced team leaders, Dominican ministry partners, and translators throughout the week, allowing you to focus on the people you came to serve rather than the logistics of the trip.
A Summer That Leaves a Lasting Mark
Every summer gives families opportunities to spend time together. A mission trip offers something different. It is an opportunity to step away from the usual routine and spend a week serving others, growing in your faith, and experiencing God’s work in a new way.
While the trip may only last a week, its impact often continues long after everyone returns home. Families come home with treasured memories, stories they will tell for years to come, and a deeper appreciation for what God is doing around the world. Whether this is your family’s first mission trip or one of many, serving together can become part of your family’s story for years to come.
If your family is looking for a meaningful way to spend part of your summer, we’d love to help you explore whether a mission trip with For the Widow Ministries is the right fit.
